A recent article in The New York Times, follows the Cleveland
Botanical Garden's switch from a Flower Show (the largest outdoor
garden show in North America), to the "RIPE! Food & Garden
Festival", in an effort to reach a wider audience. The garden's
executive director said "Food is an easier sell." The article's
author, Judith H. Dobrzynski, seemed to appreciate the cynicism of
this when she wrote that RIPE "...celebrates the trend of locally

Giving Your Garden a Sense of Age and Substance

I love to tour old, established gardens. ThereÂ’s
nothing so evocative as trees obscured by clinging vines and the
scent of damp stones. It gets me thinking about how
IÂ’d use the garden, where my favorite place to sit
would be if IÂ’d lived there and what it would be like
to grow up in a place like that. ThereÂ’s a charm to an
old garden that only patience can bring to a new garden. But if
youÂ’ve ever been to a garden show with landscape
displays, youÂ’ve seen gardens that were put together
in a matter of days, yet still have a sense of mellowed maturity.
